Hey Guys and Gals! Jason from Absolute Home Inspections, here again to help answer some of your home buying questions. Today’s topic is the home Smoke Detectors. We do hundreds of inspections every year and one of the most common deficiencies are old or missing Smoke Detectors.

What is a Smoke Detector? A Smoke Detector is a device that detects smoke (where there’s smoke there is typically fire!) and then alerts the occupants with an audible (and sometimes visual) alarm.

Why is it important? When installed correctly and maintained properly, Smoke Detectors can play a vital role in saving lives!

Is it required? As of July 1st 2014, Smoke Detectors are required within 20 feet of stoves, on every level of a home, outside sleeping areas and inside every bedroom.

How long do they last? Most current Smoke Detectors have a 10 year battery in them. A good rule of thumb is that if the detector is starting to fade in color (turn yellow) it is time to replace it.

Are they expensive? Smoke Detectors can be purchased online or at your nearest box store for anywhere from $10-$100 depending on the installation and battery type.

Can I install this myself? Absolutely! This is not a tough install and there are several great “how to” videos on YouTube to assist with the process. Or if you’re not comfortable with that, call a local handy person to assist.
